Talking of Allah’s names, the ones that readily come to mind are Ar-Rahman, Ar-Raheem, Al-Ghafoor etc. But I never realized that the name Allah itself is the first and foremost name of our Creator… our Lord… and the one whom we worship.

In fact the name Allah is the greatest name of all His names because it is his own “personal” name which He chose for Himself… and the name which no one else can share in the entire universe.

The significance of the name Allah, can be seen in the fact that all other names attributed towards it… in other words it means that all of the beautiful names of Allah are in fact a description and expression of the perfection and beauty which is contained in this Most awesome name: Allah

وَلِلَّهِ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَىٰ فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا

And for Allah are the beautiful names so call upon him with these names.

And the beauty and magnificence of this name is due to the fact that the word Allah comes from the root word alif-laam-ha which again is the base of the word “ilaah” which means the one who has the right to be worshipped… therefore the name Allah is an open proof that He is the ONLY one worthy of our worship…

اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ لَهُ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَىٰ

Allah! there is no god but He! To Him belong the most Beautiful Names. (20:08)

This beautiful name Allah is so full of greatness and power that even in the most difficult times and the most heartbreaking sadness and unrest; if you cannot think of any dua and you just say the word “Allah”…  you will find your heart coming back to peace… because the reassurance of the heart and soul has been placed in the remembrance of Allah;

Those who believe, and whose hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of Allah: for without doubt in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find satisfaction. (13:28)

Even in its pronunciation the word Allah is so simple, soft and easy to say… that even small children who have not yet learned to speak can say Allah… because it doesn’t require any effort… just remembrance!

So call upon Allah often and you will realize that His perfection is enough for us… the insecurity caused by the imperfection of things and people, can no longer haunt us if we know and recognize that Allah is perfect and His care is perfect and His plans for us are perfect… just as all His names and attributes are perfect…

The only thing we need is to recognize Allah… to ponder upon the beauty of His name Allah… and to make it a part of our life so that we might Love and trust Him with all our heart and soul…

Adding on to yesterday’s post

When I began studying about the beautiful names of Allah in the book “Fiqh-ul-Qulub” there were a few things that really amazed me:

I had never before thought of His names to be the means with which to connect to Him. Although I had read ayaat of Quran referring to this topic but it never really got through to my heart… that the pleasure of the heart is to know Allah through His beautiful names because all of these names lead us towards His praise and perfection.

I had never contemplated the fact that these beautiful names are not just beautiful words which create such a beautiful and soothing melody when recited all together… rather every single name is an attribute full of perfection and magnificence.

Then another thing which I learned was the powerful impact of these names on our heart… how the heart humbles itself when it realizes the infinite perfection and majesty of Allah… how it melts with love… how it bows down in gratitude and submissiveness…

But the best of the best is the comfort and pleasure of knowing How amazingly beautiful and perfect are the qualities of the One who is taking care of us…

Most of the time we remain imprisoned in the anxiety of our inadequacies and imperfections… we lament on how little control we have over our affairs… we become so sad and resentful that the people who were supposed to take care of us are so deficient in the ability to do so…

And so most of our thoughts revolve around… how will I do this? Who will help me? What if I fail? What will become of this and that… and so on…

We behave like we are alone without anyone to take care of us… although in the back of our minds we have memorized the lines like “Allah Malik hai” (Allah is the owner of all affairs) “Allah khair karay ga” (Allah will do what’s better) But it is a parrot like utterance… because if we really believed then why would we be so tense and fearful?

The reason for this lack of faith is that we have not spent any time on learning about Allah.

So this series of articles is a humble effort to convey a taste of this knowledge and inspiration which I got through this book… I pray that Allah might accept it and open our hearts to His recognition which might lead us to His endless love and mercy and forgiveness… ameen

Why this topic?

Before I begin expressing my feelings about Allah’s beautiful names, I think I should first write about the reason why I chose this awesome topic.

The truth is that I am feeling really so small and ignorant in front of the vastness of this subject and that is one reason why I have let so many days go by in just mustering up my courage to begin this journey…

Yes! to me it feels exactly like taking off on a voyage across a vast ocean… the hope of making new discoveries urges me forward… while the fear of my incapability and inadequacy pulls me back…

But then I reminded myself that all power and perfection is with Allah… it is He who takes us across oceans… it is His power that moves us forward…

Therefore what can be more important than learning about Him? What pleasure or comfort can be more fulfilling than the knowledge of the One for whose recognition and closeness our hearts keep yearning?

And the truth is that we can never be at peace, until we know Him… and understand Him… through His names.

To learn about these beautiful names is absolutely essential because our faith cannot be complete unless we know about the One on whom we have faith…

And so in the Quran Allah urges us to call Him through these awesome names:

وَلِلَّهِ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَىٰ فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا ۖ وَذَرُوا الَّذِينَ يُلْحِدُونَ فِي أَسْمَائِهِ ۚ سَيُجْزَوْنَ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُون

And Allah’s are the best names, therefore call on Him thereby, and leave alone those who violate the sanctity of His names; they shall be recompensed for what they did.

Alhamdulillah this new blog of mine is dedicated to the understanding and recognition of Allah through His beautiful names… so that we might love Him and connect to Him on a personal level… thus fulfilling the purpose of our life which is to worship Him and serve Him in deepest love and humility. May Allah accept this small first step and make it beneficial for me and my readers… ameen
